Eastern (Red-Spotted) Newt
Notophthalmus viridescens
Description:
This amphibian is so cool. It has 3 life stages: the aquatic larva, the red-eft or terrestrial juvenile stage (shown here), and the aquatic adult. So, from water to land and then back to water. Undoubtedly my favorite North American amphibian... finding them is like finding gold.
Habitat:
Found under a little log in an upland forest in east-central Alabama.
